Just a note to let you know that TCM is showing "Corruption" this week on late Friday/early Saturday at 12:45 am PDT. I can't speak for the rest of you, but I'm a Cushing fan and have been looking for a copy of this film for years and couldn't find it anywhere, even on Netflix. So anybody that likes Peter Cushing films should definitely tune in. Just thought I'd let you know. You can see the trailer here:

Should we record it and then post it here?

No, sorry to say, you can't post it here. For one thing, the film's copyright so that puts it out of the running right there. And, for the most part, most of us tend to refrain from putting up movies recorded from tv, mostly because of the tv station stuff that pops up on the corner of the screen. But I would recommend recording it for your own fair use, at least until a legitimate copy becomes available.

This reminds me of an issue I've been curious about for a while. For the past few months I've been working my way through the Film Noir collection. Every once in a while during some of the films, the logo of a cable network - usually TCM or the Mystery Channel - will appear at the lower right of the screen, giving away the origin of the recording. Even though the film in question is PD, I've often wondered whether the existence of the network "splash logo" is somehow problematic from the legal point of view. Or is it (as I hope) a non-issue?

The logos are trademarks for the networks. They can be obscured with software, making a movie broadcast on TV safe to upload here. Those movies here with visible logos ought to be removed before takedown notices are sent to IA.

You've seen this on films here in IA? I haven't but then I really haven't had a chance to watch all the movies and shows I've downloaded here.

[Also a reply to Bill's post, below] Oh, most assuredly I have seen these logos crop up among the Noirs, perhaps 4 or 5 films. I kind of wish I hadn't said anything now...although it will be to the ultimate benefit of the archive and its mission if the issue is dealt with rather than ignored. I haven't kept any kind of formal list of which films are affected, but the logos (always TCM and in one instance the Mystery Channel) do appear among a few of the real gems of the collection. I would hate to see them disappear for any protracted length of time, and I would also hate to see them re-uploaded at the expense of their user-submitted reviews being wiped out (well, most of reviews, anyway). Can the situation be fixed, i.e., the logos masked, without compromising any of this?

The logos also show up on TV shows. I recently made a disc of the old Gene Autry shows, and every one of them had an "Encore" logo over the credits.

I wish I could be more helpful about which of the films I've seen the logos on...I tend to watch them late at night, and over the past few months they've kind of blurred together into a montage of fog, shadows, cigarette smoke, neon lights, overcoats, fedoras, gun barrels, cheap motel rooms, two-bit hoods, and double-crossing dames. With an occasional "TCM" superimposed.

There are a bunch of silent movies I've seen here, and many have brand new copyrighted soundtracks. They shouldn't be here either, but I can't recall which ones. I'm not going to go back and find and flag them. I just wish uploaders had removed the audio tracks from them, 'cause now they could disappear.

Yeah, if I were to get off my lazy butt and get this software (and use it) there would probably be at least a few more feature films that I could add to the archive. But my thing is scary movies and I think that all the scary stuff that's PD is pretty much already here anyway. Oh well, at least I can find plenty of trailers.

Yep. I had these, too, but never looked at them until now. Not only is the 'Encore' watermark on every one, so is "Copyright 2000." (By Flying A Enterprises). The copies themselves are very clean technically.

I understand that all the Gene Autry shows you see on the Westerns channel are restored works so even if the network logo is obscured, these shows might not be OK to be here anyway. I could be wrong about them being restored but I seem to remember hearing they were.

Corruption is a great movie. I think an alternate title for it is Laser Killer.
